With summer only a couple weeks away and temperatures on the rise, staying cool is crucial when working outside. Millions of hard working individuals sweat everyday while on the job and risk being exposed to extreme heat and heat-related illness. According to the Iowa State University Environmental Health and Safety, heat stress occurs when the body is under duress from overheating. Heat-related illnesses include heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat rash, or heat stroke. Symptoms can range from sweating, dizziness, cessation of sweating, and collapse. Because construction is labor intensive, this can cause the body to generate excessive heat, especially when working outdoors during the hottest times of the year. Other construction jobs may expose workers to heat sources that are part of the work process, such as welding, cutting torches or hot asphalt contained in roofing kettles and paving machines.
The CDC created a list of safety guidelines when working in extreme temperatures – The following should be considered by employers, safety and health professionals when taking steps to protect workers from the adverse health effects of working in the heat:
- Engineering and work practice controls
- Training and acclimatization (allowing the body to gradually adjust to the heat)
- Measuring and assessing heat stress
- Medical monitoring and heat-protective clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE).
